IV Sedation
Whittier, CA

When oral health issues arise, treatment is essential. No matter if it is a cavity, a tooth infection, a tooth that requires extracting, or you need a full mouth reconstruction, getting treatment immediately is critical for restoring your oral health and your quality of life. If the thought of going to the dentist fills you with anxiety or fear, though, you might do everything in your power to avoid going. Ignoring dental health issues can be very detrimental. At Simon K. Choyee, DDS, Inc., we can help you to get the treatments you need with IV sedation.

Effects of Ignoring Dental Treatment

Ignoring dental treatment can have significant effects on your oral health and your overall health. Even if your issues do not seem all that serious when you first notice them, oral health issues tend to worsen over time. Ignoring necessary dental treatment can lead to significant consequences such as infections, gum recession, loose teeth, and tooth loss. Bacteria can also enter into your bloodstream, where they can travel throughout your body, causing serious issues like heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

Why Use Sedation?

Sedation is a type of treatment that is administered to help you relax and feel more comfortable, which then allows us to provide you with the care you need in a safe, effective manner. Sedation is often recommended for patients who experience anxiety or fear when it comes to undergoing dental treatment. Sedation may also be used in other situations as well, such as:
•  You have a low tolerance for pain.
•  Your teeth are incredibly sensitive.
•  Your gag reflex is strong and easily triggered.
•  You find it difficult to sit still.
•  You require extensive treatment or your procedure will take a long time.

What is IV Sedation?

IV sedation is a form of sedation that involves delivering the sedative medication directly into your bloodstream through a small needle that is inserted into your arm or the back of your hand. The needle is hooked up to IV fluids. When we are ready to begin your procedure, the medication is administered into the fluids, where it goes into your bloodstream. Once in your blood, the medication takes effect almost immediately. You feel almost instantly relaxed and at ease. IV sedation also causes you to feel sleepy, although you are still conscious. Many patients report temporary amnesia and are unable to recall parts, or even any, of their dental procedure.

Before undergoing treatment with IV sedation, you will be provided with instructions that need to be followed. You will need to abstain from food and drinks, including water, for at least 6 to 8 hours before your scheduled appointment. If you take medications, you may be recommended to take them as normal, in which case a small amount of water is permissible.

The Benefits of IV Sedation

IV sedation provides several benefits.
•  Sedation takes effect very quickly.
•  You feel relaxed and comfortable, allowing us to perform your procedures safely and effectively.
•  IV sedation can be adjusted as needed throughout your treatment.

Is IV Sedation Safe?

IV sedation is considered to be a very safe, very effective way to help you relax so that we can perform your necessary dental treatments. Before recommending IV sedation, we go over your complete medical history and discuss the pros and cons of this type of sedation to make sure it is the right option for you. The instructions you are provided with before treatment with IV sedation are important and should be followed. These instructions are designed to ensure your safety during treatment.

During the entire course of your treatment, you are monitored by a trained professional. Your vitals are monitored, and sedation can be monitored as needed. Once your procedure is complete, and the needle is removed, you remain in the office for a set period so that we can monitor you. The effects of IV sedation can linger for several hours, so it is important that you have someone who can drive you home after you are released.

If the thought of undergoing dental care fills you with dread, IV sedation can help. Call Simon K. Choyee, DDS, Inc. at (562) 947-4781 today to learn more and find out if IV sedation is right for you.
