Bone Regeneration


Your jawbone is an integral component of your mouth. It helps you to effectively bite and chew your food. It aids in proper speech. It helps to maintain the shape of your face. What Causes Bone Loss in the Jaw?


There are several different issues that can lead to bone loss in your jaw.
•  Gum disease. When bacteria get under your gum line, they can begin attacking your jawbone and periodontal ligaments. This leads to bony defects around the teeth. Bone loss can also cause your teeth to become unstable in their sockets as they lose their support.
•  Tooth loss. Your teeth provide stimulation for your jaw, which helps to keep your jaw strong and healthy. When you suffer tooth loss, your jaw loses stimulation. As a result, it begins to lose mass and grow weak.
•  Tooth extraction. When you have teeth extracted, a portion of bone may be removed with the teeth.
•  Facial trauma.

Bone Grafting


Bone grafting is a surgical procedure that is designed to replace missing bone mass, restoring its strength. The procedure involves harvesting bone mass from another area of your body, or taking bone tissue from a tissue bank, and transplanting it to the affected areas of your jaw. As you heal, your existing jawbone begins to fuse to the graft material, giving your jaw back its strength.
There are a few different types of bone grafts that may be performed.
•  Autograft. An autograft uses bone mass harvested from another area of your own body. Because we use your tissue, there is no risk of graft rejection.
•  Allograft. An allograft uses bone taken from a tissue bank. This tissue is screened before use to reduce the risk of disease transmission and rejection. Because we do not use your tissue, there is no need for an additional surgical site.
•  Xenograft. A xenograft uses tissue harvested from a non-human source. The bone, typically bovine, is processed at very high temperatures to render it safe for use. Like an allograft, there is no need for additional surgical sites.

Guided Bone Regeneration


Guided bone regeneration, or GBR, is a procedure that involves the placement of a special membrane over a newly placed bone graft before the gums are sutured closed. The membrane functions to keep the bone tissue and the soft tissue separate, preventing faster healing soft tissue from filling in areas where bone should be. GBR also aids in stimulating the growth of new bone tissue, helping to restore the strength and integrity of your jaw.
